Garfield Schools Offers Gang, Drug Awareness Talk GARFIELD, N.J. -- Guest speakers from "Steered Straight" will talk about gang and drug awareness at Garfield Middle School Tuesday, Dec. 1.The 6:30 p.m. event for parents and friends will cover positive and realistic ways to talk to children about gangs and drugs.  Steered Straight is committed to providing real-life, motivational messages about substance use and abuse, gang involvement and bullying, its website says. Free childcare will be available and light refreshments will be provided by the PBA Local #46 Reilly Family. Garfield Middle School is located at 175 Lanza Ave.

North Castle First Responders Receive Grants From Stayin' Alive NORTH CASTLE, N.Y. -- Stayin' Alive presented the 2015 Grant Awards at the North Castle Town Board meeting in October. The charity supports the first responders of Northern Westchester with equipment that their budgets don't provide. Funds are raised at the Stayin' Alive 5K Fun Run each May in Windmill. The charity awarded over $36,000 to local first responders, including the Armonk, Banksville, North White Plains and Thornwood fire departments, as well as the North Castle Police Department. Elementary School Cafeteria Monitor In Westchester Saves Boy From Choking PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A school aide's quick response to a life threatening situation in the cafeteria at Hillcrest Elementary School recently may have averted a tragedy.Playground/Cafeteria Monitor Lynn Riccio noticed that Alex Loja was choking on a piece of food during his third period lunch on Thursday, Nov. 18. Thanks to her first aid skills, Riccio was able to save the boy's life when she administered the Heimlich maneuver, according to a Facebook post.
